Tumescent Liposuction

Tumescent liposuction involves the removal of localized deposits of fat in a very safe manner. It is a minimally invasive procedure as it uses tumescent anesthetic and small microcannulas, (hollow steel tubes) to smoothly remove fat. The smoother the removal, the better the result and the less pain afterwards. The surgery involves injection of a large quantity of diluted local anesthetic solution into the pockets of fat to numb them and make the tissue firm. Small openings are made in the skin and thin cannulas are used to gently and evenly remove the fat.

The openings used to access the fat heal in a week and are virtually invisible in a month. Minimal to no pain coupled with a smooth appearance give an excellent result. The anesthetic solution lasts for several hours, minimizing the need for narcotic pain meds and a shorter recovery period.

High volume liposuction is a contrast in results. Often offered by plastic surgeons, this technique is done under general anesthesia, using large cannulas to rapidly remove a lot of fat, resulting in significant bleeding and significantly greater risk of complications. Irregularities in contour and significant scarring at sites of entry, as well as prolonged swelling and loss of blood, can accompany this technique.

In tumescent liposuction, the postoperative period is an easy one. Special absorbent pads are held in place with a compression garment, which is worn for a short period of time. Healing is rapid and usually without event. Most patients can resume daily activities (with common sense) in as little as 3 days. As with any surgical procedure, there are certain risks and complications associated with tumescent liposuction. Other possible complications will be discussed with you at your consultation.

This innovative and extremely safe technique was invented by Dr Jeffrey Klein, a dermatologist, with whom Dr Resnik trained. The combination of patient safety and excellent results make tumescent liposuction a very gratifying procedure.
