Painless ways to help your fellow humans

Painless ways to help your fellow humans

We all have in us the desire to help our fellow humans. How we do that is up to us. Holding the door open for someone behind us, keeping an eye out for kids and pets as we drive through neighborhoods, helping someone who appears lost or hurt. These efforts cost us nothing, help fill our Mitzvah Banks (the Good Deed Bank) and generally make us feel great.

In light of this universal desire inside all of us, I wanted to bring to your attention several more ways we can help our fellow humans with little to no effort.

  • Give blood: with one small pinch, we can give life to people who are sick and in need of the many life-saving properties of our blood. Platelets, cells, plasma, it’s all in there and easy to do at 6w intervals. Go to www.oneblood.org/ to find out more.
  • Register to donate your bone marrow: it is a sad fact that some of us will have a relative, child or spouse who will need a bone marrow transplant. However, it is not always true that a relative will be able to take your marrow. It may be a complete stranger who needs your help in their fight against death. The actual process of donation is an easy thing. Register at bethematch.org/ so someone, family or stranger, can find you when they need you.
  • Register to donate your organs: each of us may need a donation now or in the future. Most donations are harvested after we leave this “mortal coil”, but some, like kidneys, are donated while we roam the planet. Register at www.donatelifeflorida.org/ or the similar organization in your state so you can leave behind a wealth of health for those who come after you.

Remember, we all live on this planet together. We are reminded of that fact every time we do something for someone else.
