What Is It?
Athlete's Foot and ringworm are actually fungal infections of the top layer of skin. These infections are common in adolescents and adults. There are many different types of rashes, but the most common are scaling, flat areas, and patches, which often have a worm-like border. Itching is common and often the biggest complaint.
What Causes It?
The feet are the most common area infected by the fungus. It is most common in patients with sweaty feet. Shoes provide a warm, moist environment, which encourages fungal growth. Athlete's foot may affect any area of the foot, but most likely it occurs on the instep or between the toes.
What Can Be Done?
Treatment for athlete's foot or ringworm includes topical anti-fungal creams. More severe cases may require stronger oral medications taken by mouth. A medicated powder may also be given to help keep the feet dry. The fungal infection can last three to four weeks.
