RESNIK DERMATOLOGY ANNOUNCES REVOLUTIONARY TREATMENT OF ACTINIC KERATOSES

Potential Precursor to Skin Cancer Affects Up To Five Million Americans

MIAMI AND AVENTURA, FL, October 1, 2001 - Resnik Dermatology today announced the availability of a new and revolutionary treatment of actinic keratoses (AKs), potentially pre-cancerous lesions most often found on the upper limbs, face and scalp. Sometimes referred to as "blue light technology," LEVULAN® PDT is the first System to use the drug, LEVULAN® (aminolevulinic acid HCl) Topical Solution, 20%, which, when activated by a certain light, will remove actinic keratoses on the face and scalp. It is a unique technology where lesions resulting from previous sun exposure are now treated with a drug and a safe, visible light source. The rate of progression of individual actinic keratosis lesions into invasive squamous cell carcinoma is estimated at up to 16 percent per year. Squamous cell carcinoma is the second leading cause of skin cancer deaths in the United States. Because physicians cannot predict which lesions will result in cancer, three major medical groups - the American Academy of Dermatology, the American Cancer Society and the Skin Cancer Foundation - recommend that people with AKs get treatment immediately.

The LEVULAN® PDT System Approved in September 2000, the LEVULAN® PDT System combines the application of a topical solution with the BLU-U® Photodynamic Therapy Illuminator to treat the AKs while leaving healthy skin unharmed. A physician applies the LEVULAN® to the affected area using the KERASTICK®, a unique applicator. The patient returns to the physician's office 14 to 18 hours later and exposes the affected area to the BLU-U® Photodynamic Therapy Illuminator, a non-laser fluorescent light source. When the solution reacts to this visible blue light, the lesion is eliminated and the healing process begins.
